RIP Netscape

Today Netscape died.

While some say it was already gone, whether beaten in the “browser wars” of the 1990s or killed by its acquisition by AOL in 1998, it’s now officially unsupported and there will no longer be any more releases.

Mosaic Communications Corporation founders Marc Andressen and Jim Clark developed the first commercial browser called Mosaic Netscape 0.9 way back in 1994. Thanks to their efforts, internet usage, as we now know it, exploded. It has to be sad for them.

But dry your tears and go download Firefox, which in reality is the current incarnation of Netscape. Wired reminds us that if you are feeling nostalgic for Netscape to install Netscape’s theme and extensions pack for Firefox.
